In Romans 12:2, Paul urges you to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Renewing the mind is like rebooting a computer when it hangs up or needs to update a program. Sometimes a computer gets corrupted and needs to be reprogramed. Your brain is like a computer. It runs on whatever program you install (or others install). You can reboot or reprogram your brain, but it takes conscious effort.

Time with God each day is similar to rebooting. It allows you to unload the cares of each day and seek his guidance. In turn, the Holy Spirit renews your mind by speaking to you through scripture or to your heart about things. This is how you can come to know God’s will.

It’s important to acknowledge reality – the things really happening. But don’t dwell on the happenings, good or bad. Your brain believes what you tell it – truth or fiction. George Orwell wrote that the most dangerous times for societies are when people willfully choose to believe lies.

Your brain believes, “I’m a loser and everybody hates me,” just as readily as “That hurt, but I’m gonna be okay.”

If you are a normal person, each day brings a full range of encounters from pleasant to down right harsh. God will help you refresh or restart your mind each day to function best in the world.
