Wisdom encompasses the ways God designed for people to live. The Bible is full of references to wisdom (219, according to Bible Gateway) as well as contrasts between the wise and foolish person.

In Proverbs 8, wisdom is said to dwell with prudence and possess knowledge and discretion (8:12). She hates pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech (8:13). She has insight and power (8:14). Anyone who seeks her finds her, and they find riches, honor, and enduring wealth and prosperity (8: 17 – 18).

Wisdom is timeless and was created by God before there was an earth, people, or anything. She accompanied God as he created everything. “I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep” (8:22 – 31).

God promises wisdom to anyone who seeks it as stated in James 1: 5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

You don’t need to be smart or particularly gifted to be wise. It starts with an attitude of humility and willingness to be taught and grows through perseverance. Don’t stop seeking and doing the right thing day in and day out. One day you’ll realize that you are a wise person.

It’s interesting that the Bible gives wisdom a female personification. Just a note for those who think God discriminates against women.

Who do you consider wise? Are you wise?
